For Robbinsdale Middle School eighth-grader Aidan Bimberg, one of Robbinsdale Area Schools’ remarkable students, math adds up.

Aidan won the gold medal for the highest cumulative score for the season in Minnesota Jr. High Math League among the roughly 120 students who participated. This is the third year Aidan has won a medal, having finished with a bronze (third place) as a sixth-grader and a silver (second place) last year as a seventh-grader. He takes Algebra 2 at Cooper High School.

“I got good at math in third and fourth grades,” Aidan says. “It’s really straightforward – you follow the steps, and it’s done.”

Math Team Coach John Orbison says the Minnesota Jr. High Math League is the first of two significant competitions for the team. The second one, a national competition called MATHCOUNTS, is beginning now, and will have a regional competition on Feb. 13 and a state competition on March 12.

“When Aidan joined the RMS team as a sixth-grader, he was already an accomplished ‘mathlete,’ having had a lot of success in Math Masters in elementary school, but it has been fun to watch him continue to grow in his knowledge and skills,” Orbison says. “Aidan is a sponge when it comes to math, soaking up every bit of it he can get. Besides that thirst, he is also very enthusiastic about exploring different ways to solve a problem and finding the most efficient one. His problem-solving creativity and enthusiasm rub off on his teammates, with whom he shares freely.”
