Wilbur WinkelmanRobbinsdale Area Schools (RAS) is pleased to announce Wilbur Winkelman has been selected as one of nine finalists for the 2019 Minnesota Teacher of the Year honor. Mr. Winkelman is a 5th grade teacher at Lakeview Elementary in Robbinsdale; he was also the 2018 Robbinsdale School District Teacher of the Year.

“We are excited to recognize Mr. Winkelman for being a Minnesota Teacher of the Year Finalist,” said RAS Superintendent, Dr. Carlton D. Jenkins. “He is an excellent example of our district’s outstanding educators who are focused on academic excellence for all students,” he said.

An initial field of 168 candidates was originally selected from across the state, including Colleen Crossley, a teacher in the RAS Adult Academic Program based out of the Crystal Learning Center. The pool was narrowed to 40 semifinalists, determined by an independent selection panel of 24 community leaders.

“We are so proud of Wilbur on being selected as a Finalist, and representing Robbinsdale Area Schools! This is well-deserved recognition of his dedicated and innovative teaching,” said Peter Eckhoff, President of the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers.

This year marks the 55th Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. According to a release from Education Minnesota, the selection panel meets again May 4 to conduct individual interviews with each of the nine finalists and to cast votes for the 2019 Minnesota Teacher of the Year. The current Minnesota Teacher of the Year, Kelly D. Holstine, will announce this year’s honoree at a banquet May 5 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul.
