APA Principal Updates

We appreciate our members reaching out to us so we can share, listen, and support all parent voices  and we appreciate that so many people are engaged at this crucial time for our district. APA’s mission is to support all parent voices, and not all of our active members are of the same opinion on recent issues. By active members, we mean those who have come to meetings and taken the opportunity to pose questions to and discuss with both Principal Dahl and Superintendent Jenkins when they came to speak with us about our many concerns. Thus, as an organization, we feel it important to leave it to individuals to make their own informed choice.  The APA will continue to provide information, a forum for discussion, and encourage members to get involved in all situations that affect Armstrong High School.

Dear Armstrong Community:

Last week, Principal Dahl was informed that he would be reassigned as a Principal on special assignment position for the next school year to fill an unmet need in Pupil Services.  A special staff meeting was called this morning (Monday) at Armstrong High School where staff learned of this decision from Superintendent Jenkins. This lateral move falls under management right of reassignment; it is not a demotion which would require an evaluative process.  Principals and Assistant Principals in the district have been reassigned over the years, just not at Armstrong at the Principal level.  The reassignment is to fill an unmet need in the district regarding a 3-year conciliation agreement with the Department of Human Rights to address dis-proportionality in disciplinary outcomes.  The Superintendent has stated he was not fully informed of Mr. Dahl’s plan to retire in 2020.

If you have additional questions or an opinion you would like to communicate, there are a number of options available to express your viewpoint.  Regardless of which option you choose, we ask that you communicate with respect and civility.  Please model the behaviors that Armstrong has worked to teach our children about persuasive argument, research, civil discord, governance and public speaking.  We will continue to post options for you including school board meetings and times, listening sessions, public conversations with district officials, email addresses and any other opportunities we find.

Monday's already-scheduled school board meeting did not include a listening session - the next one is on March 18th when comments will be heard.  The meeting tonight was open to the public (as always) and many Armstrong students, staff, and parents attended and showed silent support for Principal Dahl.

Local news reports about Principal Dahl’s reassignment for next school year were aired tonight.  In those stories and at the school board meeting tonight it was reported that district staff would be available at Armstrong this week for public conversation and that Superintendent Jenkins would attend our monthly APA meeting next week.  We will confirm these dates and times and post them on our website and FB page when we receive confirmation from the district directly.

Thank you for being valued and engaged members of our Armstrong school community.  Please feel free to share this information on your own pages and on your community pages.
